Your Duties as a Bridesmaid
Being asked by someone you love to serve as a bridesmaid or maid of honor can be both exciting and overwhelming. After all, you probably know that there are a lot of bridesmaid duties that you will have to handle, but you may not know exactly what you are expected to take care of. The following guide can help you figure out where to start and what you can do to help the bride.
Getting married is a big deal, and many couples choose to have several parties in the months and weeks prior to the big day. As a bridesmaid, you should plan to at least attend all of the parties, if not help with the planning. While you probably don’t need to worry about throwing an engagement party, your maid of honor duties will be to help plan both the bridal shower and the bachelorette party.
The bridal shower should be held at least four months prior to the wedding day. All of the bride’s family members and close friends should be invited. You may want to come up with a theme that fits the personality of the bride and implement some fun games.
Bachelorette parties are usually held a week to a month before the wedding. Your bridesmaid duties include planning and hosting the party that will help the bride say goodbye to the single life.
You should plan to purchase a gift for each party that you attend, as well as the wedding, including the following:
- Engagement party
- Bridal shower
- Bachelorette party
- Wedding day
It may seem excessive to buy four different gifts, but as a bridesmaid you need to show your support and love for the bride and groom. It is a good idea to start shopping as soon as the registry is out so that you can get first dibs on the best gifts.
As part of your bridesmaid duties, you may be asked to accompany the bride as she chooses a dress. Regardless of your own opinions, you should grin and bear it, keeping in mind that it is her big day. Also keep in mind that the bride will likely choose the dress that you wear, so be prepared to throw your opinions out the window and buck up, even if it is the least flattering thing that you have ever worn.
Bridesmaid duties can seem vast, but it is important to remember that you are providing needing love and support to the bride when she needs it most. She trusts and respects you, otherwise she would not have asked for your help.
