Bringing an idea to life… Bronte

Our ‘Bronte’ gown is beautiful and classic with a modern edge- the perfect choice for a ball gown or designer bridesmaid dress

For our designers, the process of creating a gown starts with a single idea and must for fill a need. Asking a few questions like: What are we missing in the shop? What do women want that we don’t have? How do they want to feel? What parts of our bodies do we want to hide and what do we want to flaunt?

Then design process can really begin. Bronte’s shape was inspired by Wild Violet’s signature silhouette- a well-fitted bodice and full circle skirt. This shape suits just about every body shape and height, and is the basis for many of our favourite bridesmaid dress and ball dress styles.

Bronte was inspired by a previous best seller, Ruby, which sold for five seasons and looked amazing on every body. We wanted to add a modern edge and some extra personality. This started with incorporating the points in the bodice, which had two advantages- firstly it was a more modern take on the traditional sweetheart neckline, and it also gives height for those with a larger bust. Her supportive structure and universally flattering shape makes her an ideal choice for bridesmaid dresses.

So we knew the shape we wanted to create, now for the fabrics! Both Jenni and Nicola were instantly drawn to the unique fabric they chose for Bronte’s bodice. Its texture is wonderfully tactile, and the fabric is detailed enough to add interest to the design without being over the top. It’s neither floral nor metallic or sequined, adding something very individual to Bronte’s overall look.

We wanted a little extra sparkle and that came in the form of a diamante belt. The particular trim for Bronte’s waistband was chosen from a large selection of hand sourced trims, ultimately it came to technical reasons. It’s just the right width to highlight the waist without adding bulk, and the pattern is a regular repeat, which means it can be cut easily with little to no wastage.

Bronte now has three standard colours- the original blush and charcoal, plus the more recent addition of a bright silver shade.

The Bronte has proven to be a much-loved style and her popularity shows no sign of slowing down! Having been worn beautifully from size 4 to 20 by bridesmaids and to balls. Recently she has been worn as a beautiful modern wedding dress for a second wedding in Las Vegas! And is currently being customized into an amazing ivory wedding gown. She really is the perfect choice for any occasion and any body shape.

The Top 3 Do’s for Buying Dresses Online

blush bridesmaid

While there is something magical about browsing through wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses with your bridal party and nearest and dearest, buying your bridal dresses online offers ease, variety and convenience during the incredibly hectic pre-wedding period.

What’s more, buying wedding and bridesmaid dresses online gives brides and bridal party members the opportunity to try on their gowns in the comfort of their own homes with the luxury of having shoes, jewellery and other accessories at the ready to be sampled with the dress, something that isn’t readily available when shopping for dresses in a store.

When it comes to buying your wedding dress or bridesmaid dresses online however, here are the top 3 things you need to pay close attention to so that the dress you order online meets your expectations.

1. Read the reviews

No one will tell you the honest truth about their experiences with buying wedding dresses online quite like a previous customer will. Making sure you check out how previous customers have reviewed the online shops you are looking at is a vital step in deciding to buy dresses online.

But don’t just take the online dress shops word, head to Google and search across the web for reviews and see what comes up. Varied sources will give you a good picture of whether to buy dresses from a particular online dress shop or not.

2. Look at the photos

All reputable wedding dress and bridesmaid dress shops will feature photos of their gowns on beautifully glammed up and styled models. While this is a great way of showcasing a certain look, it is important to get a realistic view of what the dress looks like in reality.

Look out for online dress shops that also feature images of what their wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses look like across different body shapes and even on mannequins. These photos will give you further reassurance that what you are seeing is what you are going to get in the mail.

3. Measure up

A reputable online dress shop will have a sizing chart that not only features typical Australian sizes but one that also details specific measurements so that you end up with a dress that is the right fit for your body type and shape. Some online dress shops even detail how to take your measurements accurately so you find the perfect fit.

3 Common Mistakes when Picking Bridesmaid Dresses

wild violet bridesmaid dresses Perth

Finding the perfect bridesmaid dress for all members of your bridal party can oftentimes be just as tricky and stressful as finding the perfect wedding dress. One womans idea of “chic” could be another’s idea of bridesmaid dress hell, and while you might have always dreamed about having a bright yellow bridal party, your fair skinned bridesmaids will probably disagree. So how do you decide how to choose the perfect bridesmaid dresses?

We have put together 3 of the most common mistakes that brides made when picking their bridesmaid dresses for their bridal party.

Not asking the right questions

When asked to be a bridesmaid, most members of your bridal party will have some idea of what they are signing up to if they say yes. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be asking them questions, and that right questions at that.

At Wild Violet we have discovered that when shopping for bridesmaid dresses, most brides will ask what style of dress their bridal party would like to have. While this can seem like the obvious question, it actually makes the process more difficult since one bridesmaid would love an off the shoulder silk gown while another would love that knee length playful dress. The right question to ask is “What type of dress won’t you wear?”. It is considerably easier to close down on a list of bridesmaid dress “won’ts” rather than a list of their “must haves”.

Providing too many options

If you want to avoid sifting through endless pictures of bridesmaid dresses and forgo the hundreds of text messages from your bridal party asking “what about this one?”, then it is far better to narrow down the bridesmaid dress options rather than letting your bridal party pick whatever dress they want. If you want a level of cohesion between your bridesmaid dresses, try picking a colour or colour family to work with and let your bridesmaids choose from those parameters.

Jump up and get down

While your bridesmaid dresses may look amazing when you are posing for the all important wedding pictures, your dress may betray you seconds into House of Pain’s “Jump Around” on the dance floor. To ensure that your bridal party are completely comfortable and unrestricted throughout the entirety of your special day, try on those bridesmaid dresses and “jump up, jump up and get down”!

5 tips for finding your wedding dress in Perth

Wedding Dresses Perth - Bride & Groom Wedding Champagne Glasses

When it comes to finding “the one” (your wedding dress and not your partner!) the search for the perfect dress can be an overwhelming experience. If you haven’t yet started the search for your dream wedding dress, or if you are starting to feel like the process is getting too much to handle, here are our top 3 tips when it comes to shopping for your wedding dress.

Don’t bring an entourage

Reality TV wedding shows and all those romantic comedies out there have made it look like brides need to bring every female friend and relative to help with the dress search. We understand that your wedding dress is probably the most important dress that you will ever wear, so you want it to be perfect. But too many opinions make it all that much harder to come to a decision on a wedding dress.

In our experience at Wild Violet, we have found that most brides tend to fare the best in the search for their wedding dress when they are accompanied by their mum and maybe a sister or best friend. These people generally have the bride’s best interest at heart and have an understanding of the sort of wedding dress that the bride is looking for.

Keep size in mind, but don’t get hung up on it

Wedding dresses tend to vary considerably in size. For normal clothing you could be a size 8 off the rack, but when you start trying on wedding dresses and see the label that says size 12, do not be alarmed. Rather than focusing on what the label says, instead make sure that your measurements match a particular designers wedding dress size chart.

Another point worth mentioning is the likelihood that once you got engaged, you thought “I need to lose weight”. Buying a wedding dress based on the potentially slimmer bride that will be walking down the aisle in 6 months time is risky since it is much more difficult, even impossible, to let sizing out. It is much more straightforward to add more size to a wedding dress so we recommend that brides buy a wedding dress that suits their current body.

There is such a thing as shopping too early

It is not uncommon nowadays for couples to opt for longer engagements, so we recommend that brides try to resists the excitement and not start shopping for their wedding dresses more than 12 months in advance. Once brides start shopping and trying on wedding dresses, they will undoubtedly fall in love with one. But if brides know that they aren’t yet ready to purchase, they can become dissatisfied with the process.

The wedding dress you choose will also be influenced by the theme of your wedding, the venue and the other members of the bridal party. So get all those details sorted before you start shopping for your dream wedding dress.

Using Social Media to Manage Your School Ball – Fashion Faux Pas | Wild Violet Formal Wear

Using Social Media to Prevent School Ball Fashion Faux Pas

As you prepare for a school dance, you put a lot of thought and effort into how you will look for the big night. Not only is it important to look your best, but you probably also spend a lot of money on your wardrobe and beauty. Walking into your dance and seeing another girl in the same dress as you can feel almost like a betrayal, but these days you can utilize social media in your favor to prevent this awkward fashion faux pas from happening to you. Using social media to manage your school ball may help you feel better prepared and more in control.

Take a Picture

After you go shopping and find that perfect dress, you may want to do a little fashion show for your friends and family. As you do so, why not ask someone to take a picture of you in your new outfit? Make sure to get a full body shot that shows the dress from top to bottom, and take the picture in good lighting to capture the true color. If you need to, take a picture from a variety of angles to get an overall look of the entire dress.

Spread the Word

There are many different ways that you can incorporate using social media to manage your school ball. With so many platforms to choose from, pick the one on which you have the most followers. That way you can ensure that most of the people you know will see the dress that you got for the dance. The following are some of the most popular choices for teens:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • Tumblr

If you need to, share your photo on multiple platforms to reach as many friends as possible.

Some people think that using social media to manage your school ball takes the fun out of it, but there are other things you can do to make your night successful. You can communicate with other members of your group or your date to figure out where to go and what you want to do. You may even be able to put together a more efficient way to obtain payment when each member of the group is splitting the cost of the date.

Using social media to manage your school ball can be a good way to not only prevent embarrassing duplications on the dance floor, but it can also help keep you organized as you prepare for one of the most exciting nights of your life so far.

How to Do Your Hair – Bridesmaid Hairstyles | Wild Violet Evening Wear

3 Easy Bridesmaid Hairstyles You Can Do Yourself

When your friends or family members ask you to be in their wedding party, there are plenty of things that you have to do to get ready for the big day. While wedding planning is luckily not up to you, you still have to think about how you will look. Chances are you will be given a dress to wear that has been picked out by the bride, but when it comes to hair and makeup, you have to take care of that on your own. Looking your best does not have to be hard, nor does it have to cost you an arm and a leg if you can figure out how to do your hair at home.

Half-Up French Braid

If you have ever spent a summer at camp with your friends, then you probably know how to do your hair in a French braid. Now is the time to put all of that childhood practice to use. A half-up French braid can look sleek and sophisticated, while also looking bohemian and goddess-like. Simply begin your braid as you normally would, but stop halfway, leaving the rest of your hair down. Instead of securing the end of the braid with an elastic, use bobby pins for a more polished look, then curl the remaining hair.

Twisted Chignon

When it comes to understated bridesmaid hairstyles, nothing beats a low chignon. Add in some visual interest with some twists on the side and you have yourself a romantic hair-do that is sure to compliment any dress and any occasion. Part your hair, making a loose twist towards the back of your head from each side. Secure both ends together into a low ponytail with a clear elastic, then wrap the ends into a bun, securing with bobby pins.

Romantic Curls

If you know how to do your hair in full, romantic on a regular basis, then all you have to do for a wedding is amp up the volume a little bit. Whether you prefer to set your curls using hot rollers or a curling wand, make that your starting point. From there, you can tease your roots and add extra product to help the curls last throughout the entire event.

In order to create a beautiful bridesmaid look without spending a ton of money, you just have to know how to do your hair at home. Sticking to the styles that you already have down may be the best way to reduce stress or worry about preparing for your friend or loved one’s upcoming wedding.

Bridesmaid Duties – Maid of Honor Duties | Wild Violet Evening Wear

Your Duties as a Bridesmaid

Being asked by someone you love to serve as a bridesmaid or maid of honor can be both exciting and overwhelming. After all, you probably know that there are a lot of bridesmaid duties that you will have to handle, but you may not know exactly what you are expected to take care of. The following guide can help you figure out where to start and what you can do to help the bride.

1. Parties

Getting married is a big deal, and many couples choose to have several parties in the months and weeks prior to the big day. As a bridesmaid, you should plan to at least attend all of the parties, if not help with the planning. While you probably don’t need to worry about throwing an engagement party, your maid of honor duties will be to help plan both the bridal shower and the bachelorette party.

The bridal shower should be held at least four months prior to the wedding day. All of the bride’s family members and close friends should be invited. You may want to come up with a theme that fits the personality of the bride and implement some fun games.

Bachelorette parties are usually held a week to a month before the wedding. Your bridesmaid duties include planning and hosting the party that will help the bride say goodbye to the single life.

2. Gifts

You should plan to purchase a gift for each party that you attend, as well as the wedding, including the following:

  • Engagement party
  • Bridal shower
  • Bachelorette party
  • Wedding day

It may seem excessive to buy four different gifts, but as a bridesmaid you need to show your support and love for the bride and groom. It is a good idea to start shopping as soon as the registry is out so that you can get first dibs on the best gifts.

3. Wardrobe

As part of your bridesmaid duties, you may be asked to accompany the bride as she chooses a dress. Regardless of your own opinions, you should grin and bear it, keeping in mind that it is her big day. Also keep in mind that the bride will likely choose the dress that you wear, so be prepared to throw your opinions out the window and buck up, even if it is the least flattering thing that you have ever worn.

Bridesmaid duties can seem vast, but it is important to remember that you are providing needing love and support to the bride when she needs it most. She trusts and respects you, otherwise she would not have asked for your help.

Check out this list of the top things to remember to get for your school ball.

1. A Date

Going solo to a dance is certainly acceptable, but perhaps one of the most important school ball tips requires you to ask someone to accompany you. Whether you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, someone you have a crush on or simply want to go with a friend, make sure you pick someone who you feel comfortable with and will help you have a good time. You don’t have to wait around to be asked, either. Feel free to be the one to do the asking if you really want to go to your ball.

2. Wardrobe

What you wear to the dance is one of the top things to remember to get for your school ball. Since it is likely a formal event, you should focus on finding the right dress or tux for your personal taste. If possible, see if you can talk your date into matching with you so that you look great together.

3. Accessories

In order to complete your look, you need to find accessories. Choose a hairstyle and makeup that are formal and fancy, and try to pick a necklace, bracelet or earrings that really tie your wardrobe together. You may even want to get a manicure or paint your nails for the full effect. If you need to, ask for help from friends and family, or you could even visit a salon for professional assistance. If possible, try out your entire look before the big day, including your outfit, makeup, hairdo and accessories. That way you won’t have to worry on the night of the ball.

4. Transportation

Another of the top things to remember to get for your school ball is a way to and from the dance. You may choose to hire a limo for transportation as a group, or you may want to simply drive your own car. Either way, remember to be safe!

A school ball can be a great way to wrap up the school year and celebrate. If you don’t forget these top things to remember to get for your school ball, you are sure to have a good time.

Who Pays for the Bridesmaid Dress, Hair and Shoes – Bridesmaid Dresses Perth | Wild Violet Formal Wear

Who Pays for What When it Comes to Bridesmaids

Being a bridesmaid can be really fun and a big honor, but it can also be expensive if the bride decides that she won’t be forking over the money to pay for everything that it takes to look great on the wedding day. It isn’t always clear who pays for the bridesmaid dress, hair and shoes, and it may become a cause of contention if the bride is not upfront about what she will cover and what the wedding party is expected to purchase.

Bridesmaid Dresses

General etiquette suggests that the bridesmaids should pay for their own dresses, regardless of the dress the bride chooses. Since some bridesmaid dresses Perth brides choose can be extremely expensive, many brides opt to pay for half, only asking their maids to cover the remaining cost. If you are a bridesmaid and hate the dress you are being asked to wear, you may want to see if some accommodations can be made, since you are likely paying quite a bit for the dress. As the bride, you should try to make your wedding party happy, though you may not be able to please everyone.

When deciding who pays for the bridesmaid dress, hair and shoes, it may be a good option to provide the shoes as a bridesmaid gift. This can help your bridesmaids keep their costs low, while also allowing you to give them something that they will hopefully wear again. If you want your maids in designer shoes, make sure to ask them first or offer to pay for them yourself, since they can get up there in price.

Similar to the shoes, the accessories that you ask your bridesmaids to wear can serve a dual purpose as a thank-you gift. Otherwise, you may want to ask your bridesmaids to wear a certain type of jewelry that they already own, such as pearls or diamonds.

Hair and Makeup

When it comes to who pays for the bridesmaid dress, hair and shoes, hair and makeup are typically covered by the bridesmaids. Unless the bride has certain expectations and wants the bridesmaids to have the exact same hairstyles, makeup, nails or other beauty products, each bridesmaid should take care of those details on her own, or use a reasonably priced professional hired by the bride.

The etiquette surrounding weddings can be complicated, and knowing who pays for the bridesmaid dress, hair and shoes can be a touchy subject, but being honest and straightforward about who will cover the costs can help ease any sticker shock that may result.

The Five Top Colour Trends for Evening Wear and Formal Dresses

Ball Dresses, Evening Dresses, Formal Dresses, Prom Dresses, Bridesmaid Dresses

The Five Top Colour Trends for Evening Wear and Formal Dresses

When it comes to ball dresses, it’s not just about the way a dress looks on you and its design. Instead, the colour of your gown can play a large role in its overall look and flair. If you’re on the hunt for a dress to wear to an upcoming event, there are several extremely trendy colours you may want to consider purchasing your dress in to make the ultimate style statement.

  1. Peach

Evening dresses in peach are beautiful and sweet. If you would like to make a subtle statement as you walk into the ballroom, you may want to consider a dress in this colour tone. However, it’s important that you be extremely careful with peach dresses since this colour does not complement every skin tone. If you have pale skin and fair hair, it may be better to go with a dress in a bolder colour.

  1. Lilac

If you’re looking for ball dresses that are still soft and lovely and aren’t sure that peach is the best colour, you may want to consider a lilac dress. Formal dresses in this colourcan make your eyes stand out, especially if they are blue, and make you look like a princess, even if you don’t wear a tiara. If you are planning a spring wedding, dresses in lilac can also make striking bridesmaid dresses.

  1. Black

Black is one style for prom dresses and evening wear that won’t ever go out of style. Unlike peach and lilac dresses, ball dresses in this colour are designed to make you stand out whenever you walk into a room. However, since this colour is so bold, you may want to limit the accessories you wear with it. Instead, you may want to sport a bright, fire-engine red lip and put on a pair of statement earrings.

  1. Cobalt

This year, you’ve probably seen cobalt handbags, sweaters, high heels, and accessories everywhere you go. Due to this, it’s no surprise that cobalt is one of the trendiest colours for evening wear. Thanks to its radiant and deep appearance, cobalt is an idealoption for those who have cool skin tones instead of warm ones. Additionally, if you have jet black or chocolate brown hair, wearing a dress in this colour is one of the best ways to highlight this feature.

  1. Silver

Silver is probably the one colour on this list that takes you by surprise. However, due to its luxurious and eye-catching appearance, it’s no wonder that it is one of the top colours for ball dresses right now. Since it is a neutral colour, you may be tempted to pair it with bright accessories when you wear it during your big night. However, you should refrain from doing this. Like black evening wear, it is best to keep your accessories minimal when you wear a silver dress and pair it with shoes that are also silver.

If one of these trendy colours strikes your interest, don’t’ be afraid to give it a try. Not only will you make a style statement, but you will be sure to be the bell of the ball at whatever event you attend.
